Investigations into Financial Crimes

95 thousand were awarded to V. Georgiou, director of the Office of former President Demetris Christofias

Vassos Georgiou claimed and succeeded in having the service he provided as director of the Office of the President of the Republic under Demetris Christofias considered a continuation of his service in the Office of the President of the Parliament, which was also Mr. Christofias.

According to “Phileleftheros “, following a decision by the District Court, which vindicated Mr. Vasos Georgiou, he must be paid another €95,030 as a tip, bringing the total amount of the tip to approximately €172,660.

Mr. Georgiou, according to the newspaper’s report, invoked his employment contract with the initials of the President of the Republic, while at the same time referring to Marios Karoyian, who served, like himself, as the director of the President of the Parliament, receiving an increased gratuity in relation to what was provided for in his terms of employment.

Specifically, Mr. Georgiou invoked the specific contract term: “When his employment is terminated, he is entitled to receive a gratuity equal to one-sixth of his monthly earnings on the date of his departure from the position of Director of the Office of the President of the Republic for each completed month of service (including his service as Director of the Office of the President of the Parliament).”

The court stated in this regard:  “The terms for the method of calculating the gratuity, namely that it be calculated on the basis of months of service and in previous, different positions, were set out in the contract offered to the plaintiff on 29.2.2008 by the then President of the Republic, which of course binds the Republic of Cyprus.”

Vasos Georgiou was represented by the law firm “DIMITRIOU & DIMITRIOU LLC”.
